Sustainable Tourism

Updated - 29th December 2011

Proud to be a Business Supporter of Cornwall Wildlife Trust

The small positive steps we all take locally will impact globally

We are located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and only 300 metres from Tintagel Cliffs  -a designated site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI).  Our family love this area, and we are committed to reducing the impact we have on the environment.

Here are some of the positive steps we have implemented:

  • Latest initiative - 3.8kWp Solar PV panel system installed to rear of property - December 2011

  • Replacement of all double glazed windows (total 42 units) in property with high efficiency K glass type to reduce heat loss and eliminate draughts following building insulation survey conducted by Business Link Cornwall - October 2010

  • Monitor, record and analise key room temperatures and humidity levels against outside conditions and daily published internet forecasts for the local area - commenced September 2010

  • Ensuring maximum use of energy efficient lighting and with effective controls installed to minimise waste – time switches installed in public area lighting.

  • Main household appliances are A or A+ rated for energy saving as an ongoing project

  • Electricity supply is 100% Green Business Tariff - since October 2008

  • Oil boiler with oil tank removed and replaced by Electric boilers since November 2008

  • All energy use is monitored, recorded and analised for efficiency – to determine trends and implement greater efficiencies

  • Heating & hot water demand is time controlled and managed according to weather and occupancy levels.  All radiators are thermostatically controlled with settings checked daily when in use

  • Installation of reflective shields behind radiators  - minimising heat loss through walls - space heating more efficient - reduction in overall heating demand from boilers - reduction in energy use

  • Monitoring use of water demand – toilet cisterns all have a water-saving device installed – using "hippo" principle devices to reduce flush volume used

  • Minimising landfill waste by re-using and recycling whatever is possible –

    Simple examples......

    • Left over tea from teapots served during breakfast is used to water houseplants - they love the minerals and thrive

    • Old linen and textiles re-created into patchwork items and soft furnishings

    • Recycling working but older appliances and furnishings through RE-SOURCE in Bodmin

    • Donating used/surplus equipment to local charities or church as appropriate

    • Storing all used tetrapaks and appropriate plastic food containers for re-cycling at Tavistock Re-cycling Centre (Devon) which accepts items not currently re-cycled in Cornwall

  • Collecting rain water in butts for watering our outside plants - No tap water has been required for outdoor plants since 2007

  • Composting organic kitchen waste matter using standard composting bins and a  revolutionary rotary  composter - composting efficiency timescale reduced to 10-weeks

  • Use of phosphate free cleaning products only

  • Buying recycled paper products, from stationery to toilet paper

  • Purchasing ethical and Fairtrade products as much as possible including teas, coffee, fruit and fruit juices

  • Purchasing organic products including breakfast cereals, flour, baked beans, fruit and fruit juices

  • Buying locally sourced produce wherever possible

  • Implementing resource conscious policy in guest rooms – recycling guest rubbish and encourage a laundry- friendly attitude

  • Encouraging guests to explore the local area  including provision of public transport timetables

  • Tintagel is located in the heart of a network of footpaths - guests are encouraged to explore the area by foot (maps for local footpaths and cycling routes are provided)

  • Proud to be a Business supporter of Cornwall Wildlife Trust since 2009

  • Guest payback scheme - donations to Cornwall Wildlife Trust for Julie's  cake and bread recipes

  • Local tradespeople and companies are used for maintenance and project work whenever possible

  • Off-setting total business and personal carbon emissions through www.co2balance.com - Stoves for Africa, tree planting projects

Our aim is to balance the needs of our own business and those of our guests against our desire to protect the natural surroundings in order to help maintain and enhance our 'Environmental Policy'. Bosayne is a member of the local Cornwall Sustainable Tourism Project (known as the CoaST Project), Recycle for Cornwall , and the national Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS)
